GREAT GATSBY MOVIE EFFECT ON GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK - Stan's Music Notes

Sunday, May 19th, 2013

The movie “The Great Gatsby” has generated a tremendous amount of interest in the music of the Great American Songbook. Music of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Glen Miller.”I Know Why And So Do You” from Sun Valley Serenade has suddenly become a favorite along with “Where Or When” ,”Night And Day”. “It Had To Be You”, “You Were Meant For Me” , “All The Things You Are” ,”Lovely Way To Spend An Evening”, You’re Sensational”, “Use Your Imagination”,”I’ll Buy You A Star”  etc. There has also been a resurgence in the music from Broadway Musicals such as  “Love Look Away” from Flower Drum Song, the Disney songs “When You Wish Upon A Star” and “Someday My Prince Will Come”

The trend is giving the younger generation a tremendous wealth of great standards to explore and love. This past week I performed for three events with the Great Gatsby Theme – great fun.  This also brings back the great piano music of pianists such as Eddy Duchin and Carmen  Cavallaro.
